Struggling in Disruptive “Social Media” Era and Build Realistic Mindset
So i recently quit social media for 9 days. Why i quit? Maybe not quit, i was deactivated my social media because it is too much and distracting. Sometimes it makes me felt ungrateful yet insecure for what i have and what i am. Maybe a good way for socializing is not by media, but with face to face social interaction. Maybe our mental doesn’t cooperate with too much information in social media, so our brain react with stressful mind instead. Or maybe our self just doesn’t want to cooperate with an era?
After 9 days not being exposed by such information my mental felt better for sure, i didnt felt anxious anymore and i can focus more with my things, but here comes the dilemmas. When you think it is good for yourself, does it is good for your social circle? do you take the responsibility when you don’t know anymore about a day to day of your friends life? or when your friend suddenly married on instagram and you don’t congratulate it so you don’t know about what is happening and you take the responsibility of losing friend? does it really good for your literally real social life?
The funny things why i came to activate my account back just because my girlfriend and i can’t share the memes anymore because i dont have account. So we should download or capture it then send it on imessage instead. What a tiring way to get same references. I had some shocking moments when my gf sent me a news on social media and i did not know it. So to keep that us get some references i reactivated my account. maybe i’m just not to serious to quit the social media for my own sake mental? or maybe FOMO literally got in my nerves?.
Beside the lame reason why i reactivated my account, We can deny that Social Media help us a lot. I mean really a lot. Covid-19 just make it bold that we can’t leave Social Media and “Internet” things. This is a proof that the era will get more connected yet disruptive. So with all the dilemmas of quitting Social Media and the “rebellious edgy” way of thinking i try to research a.k.a “surf on the internet” once more about the pros and cons of quitting social media. The cons always tell you that we will fall behind in trends and social circle. That will lead you to another falling behind like works, chances, and networks. The dilemmas came up with the idea of being realistic. Realistic stands between optimistic and pessimistic. You just can’t be to optimistic yet pessimistic. Realistic means you realize that you live in reality of a situation and understand what can and can not be done which means you live in this surrounding of “internet” things that is adiaphorous. It just real.. And the choices is in your hand. Will you avoid and pessimist in reality? or not too optimist and just be realistist to follow the era of disruptive.
My surf about this topic came out with question “if we want to be realist than how long or how far our mental will be cooperate with enourmous information?” or “if we choose to live in this reality will someday our mental evolve?”. I’m not talk about the illness that created by emotions, but the resistances of mental. Turns out mental doesnt evolve *cmiw. but it can be strengthen.
Surf got deepened, and i found that psychologist Angela Duckworth said that mental toughness can be build by growth mindset. The growth mindset idea came from Standford University by Carol Dweck.
So the question change to “does the mindset evolve?”. Yes. It evolve through the generations. The Dualarity report showed that each demographic give different mindset.

It explain if you’re in age 30’s right now your parents mostly love to read news on newspaper or TV rather than on web-based or app platform that can give them news on demand, or as simple you like TikTok over Instagram. The mindset evolve, but what it means with growth mindset by Carol Dweck. Basically growth mindset means embracing. Embrace the challanges and the reality. In terms to embrace this reality research by Judith E. Glaser tell us that we must understand The Mindset of “Millenials”. *i hate to use this word. The uncertainty, disruptive, and technology must be embrace. If you felt this era of information is too much for you then suck it and feel free to share it wisely so it can create even a accumulative greatest idea. Interestingly research in neuroscience tell that there is a place in your brain that activates when you share or even think about sharing somethings with others. It’s called the Temporoparietal Junction (TPJ), perhaps many millenials can activate TPJ more easily than the baby boooomers. The Endless Information perhaps could be the key to open full panorama of humanity and science, live in max capacity of humanity that we can live.
With this uncertainty disruptive technological era, we used to feel fear and anxious, indeed social media is just tip of the iceberg. But imagine when people have this new model of realistic mindset that can embrace the massive information and uncertainty. So do your mindset growth? perhaps we should.
